Our President has done it again

I  call it Goodluck's Government of Distraction.
If he is not passing bills on same sex marriage, he is renaming a 50-year old founding University after the late political martyr Moshood Abiola.
I don’t have anything against the late Abiola but I do know Unilag is a Federally established Institution not Lagos state Grammar school. Its name can't be changed willy nilly.
From all indications GEJ did not follow due process nor consult stakeholders.
Wasn’t there supposed to be a referendum? Weren’t students even supposed to be involved in voting or something.
Are we even thinking of the cost of this change and really…what did Abiola do for education in general and tertiary education in particular that makes him deserving of this honor?
Why cant they just name May 29th – MKO day?

In the words of Oghenekaro Ogbinaka Chairman ASUU UNILAG

"We have always doubted the intelligence of this government and this has confirmed it. This is senseless. UNILAG was established by an act of parliament. We will go to court.".

I agree. In fact it sounds like an idea brewed following pillow talk between Dame Patience and the President. I am happy to see that our academia still have balls. I hope they see this through.

Meanwhile some gems from twitter

"GEJ unfolds plans to stop Boko Haram from bombing universities: changes their names to confuse BH"

"If UNILAG rejected you, the best punishment is to rename them MALU when you become president. Well done sir".

"Nee UNILAG"

"UNILAG Babes now Abiola Babes"

It would be funny if it weren’t so heartbreaking.

Happy Democracy Day! (sic)

  2. To be honest, I think many people are protesting because they think the new name is razz, and not because the change process wasn't transparent. I actually like the new name because it provides an opportunity for Nigerians to be reminded of the sacrifice a great national hero made.

    1. What kind of reminder is this? A polytechnic has already been named after him. No need to scrap a long-standing brand just because he wants to score a cheap political point with the westerners.

  3. Obviously, GEJ does not understand the meaning of democracy. Ahn ahn, this is an insult to law itself. Does he not know that UNILAG has a SENATE body? Does he think this is a military era?
He has committed a crime against democracy, and should be reprimanded for it.

  4. Education in Nigeria would be much better if they actually fund our schools/institutions properly and raise standards instead of wasting time on the small matter of a name change. Sadly, this is what you get when you have incompetent people running a country.

  7. I think Due Process was the missing ingredient, otherwise I don't really get the brouhaha, it won't be the first federal uni that had its name changed. Maybe they also think they're too big for MKO, after all, University of Ife was changed to OAU. This is just misplaced priorities.

    2. That is also what I know Abiola more for, but most of the other commentators, including those that advised GEJ seem to go with the hero of democracy angle. :(

  8. This guy just lost me. What was he thinking? What's wrong with him? I'm still asking, doesn't he have GOOD advisers? How does he come up with these things?!

  9. I just don't get it. Someone mentioned that he should have bestowed the name on one of the new universities he's currently building..I agree!

  10. Due process was not followed...OAU is also a federal University and I don't think people had an issue with the name change.

Some one needs to actually remind GEJ that he is not a military dictator neither is he still ruling Bayelsans. Some one please teach him basic definition and processes of democracy.
